Our History
What We Do
The Nursing Undergraduate Society aims to improve the social, academic, personal, and professional lives of nursing students at UBC Vancouver. The NUS was originally founded in 1921 and participated in the “Great Trek” of 1922 which led to the completion of the Point Grey campus in 1925. In 1923, the first nurses graduated: Beatrice Johnson, Marion Fischer and Margaret Healey, all specializing in public health, and received BASc(N) degrees.
The Nursing Undergraduate Society represents all undergraduate nursing students at the UBC Vancouver campus, advocating for the rights and interests of students in the fast-paced program. Additionally, the NUS provides a number of services and opportunities for students.
The NUS is run by a democratically elected Council of third-year students for a term of 1 year.
The purposes of the Nursing Undergraduate Society are to:
- represent and advance the rights and interests of its members;
- advocate for a more accessible, high-quality nursing education;
- influence the development of sound educational policy for nursing students;
- create opportunities and foundations for its members to be successful;
- provide experiences that complement its members’ academic and nursing pursuits;
- enhance the student experience; and
- build and strengthen our community relationships.
