Program Overview

The University of British Columbia’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the Vancouver campus is a 20-month accelerated program. Eligibility criteria can be found here. In each term, students can expect to complete up to four theoretical courses per term, one lab course, and two clinical days per week at sites in the lower mainland.

  • Term 1: fundamentals & medical/surgical (together)

  • Term 2: paediatrics & maternity/mental health & public health (split; Group A/B)

  • Term 3: acute medical/surgical (together)

  • Term 4: mental health & public health/paediatrics & maternity (split; Group A/B)

  • Term 5: consolidation & preceptorship (together/individual)

Term 1

Focus: adults and older adults

Acuity: stable; predictable

Approximate Clinical Hours: 160

Term 1 focuses on nursing care with adults/older adults in situations that are stable and predictable. Examples include inpatient rehab and low acuity inpatient medical units. Theory courses include pathophysiology (part 1), pharmacology, ethics and relational practice, and theoretical and professional foundations.

Term 2

Group A: Paediatrics & Maternity

Focus: maternity/paediatrics

Approximate Clinical Hours: 234

Term 2 is split into two groups. Group A will begin by doing paediatrics and maternity. Theory courses for Group A include nursing practice with infants, children, and youth and care of childbearing individuals and families.

Group B: Mental Health & Public Health

Focus: mental health/public health

Approximate Clinical Hours: 240

Term 2 is split into two groups. Group B will begin by doing mental health and public health. Theory courses for Group B include mental health and public health.

Theory courses for both groups include research in nursing and Indigenous health.

Term 3

Focus: adults and older adults

Acuity: subacute medical/surgical/specialized units

Approximate Clinical Hours: 273

Term 3 focuses on nursing care of adults/older adults in areas of higher acuity. Students will not be in intensive or critical care units. Theory courses include pathophysiology (part 2) and theoretical perspectives in the care of older adults.

Term 4

Group A: Mental Health & Public Health

Focus: mental health/public health

Approximate Clinical Hours: 240

Term 4 is also split into two groups. Group A will do mental health and public health. Theory courses for Group A include mental health and public health.

Group B: Paediatrics & Maternity

Focus: maternity/paediatrics

Approximate Clinical Hours: 234

Term 4 is also split into two groups. Group B does paediatrics and maternity. Theory courses for Group B include nursing practice with infants, children, and youth and care of childbearing individuals and families.

The theory course for both groups is leadership, policy, and informatics.

Term 5

Focus: variable

Acuity: variable

Approximate Clinical Hours: 312

Term 5 is consolidation and the final clinical placement of the BSN program. This term consists consolidation courses/lab and preceptorship.
